If you are experimenting, first mix a very small batch and fry a patty of the mixture to taste before mixing and cooking an entire loaf. For each 9 × 5-inch loaf, add any of the following or a combination:
- ½ cup finely grated carrots, potatoes, or sweet potatoes
- ½ cup Sautéed Mushrooms
- ¼ cup coarsely chopped toasted almonds, pecans, or walnuts
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard or drained prepared horseradish
- 1 tablespoon chopped thyme, oregano, basil, dill, or minced chives
Marion was especially partial to adding:
- ¼ cup chopped green olives and ¼ cup chopped water chestnuts
