Tempeh crumbles make an excellent stand-in for ground meat. Here, they are seasoned like Italian sausage and could easily serve as the basis for a tomato sauce. For use in other dishes, try substituting for ground meat in Picadillo, Spiced Ground Meat for Tacos, Nachos, or Sloppy Joes, adjusting the amount of tempeh accordingly.
Coarsely crumble with your hands:
Warm in a medium skillet over medium heat:
Add and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds:
Stir in the tempeh and cook, stirring frequently, until browned, 8 to 10 minutes. Stir in:
Continue to cook, stirring, until the mixture is fully combined, well browned, and fragrant, about 2 minutes more.
