MAITRANK (MAY WINE)
About twenty-five 5-ounce servings

Another German drink, dedicated to springtime and featuring fresh sweet woodruff, which, incidentally, may be grown in a shady corner of your backyard. Use the leaves before the plant’s fragrant white flowers have bloomed.

Place in a bowl in the order listed:

  • 12 sprigs young sweet woodruff
  • 1 ¼ cups powdered sugar
  • One 750ml bottle riesling, chilled
  • (1 cup brandy)

Cover and let stand, refrigerated, for 30 minutes, no longer. Remove the woodruff. Stir thoroughly and pour into a chilled punch bowl. Add:

  • Three 750ml bottles riesling, chilled
  • 1 liter club soda or one 750ml bottle Champagne, chilled

Thinly sliced oranges, sticks of pineapple, and, most appropriate of all, sprigs of woodruff may be used to decorate the bowl. Put a hulled strawberry in the bottom of each glass, to be eaten when the drink is finished.
