Using dry vermouth instead of sweet makes an Old Pal cocktail.

Fill a mixing glass three-quarters full with ice cubes. Add:

  • 1 ½ ounces bourbon or rye whiskey
  • 1 ounce sweet vermouth
  • 1 ounce Campari

Stir until well chilled, about 30 seconds. Strain over a large ice cube in a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with:

  • An orange twist or a brandied cherry
