Using Scotch instead of bourbon or rye also makes a tasty drink. You may also muddle a sugar cube with the bitters (and an orange wheel, if desired), then add the whiskey, stirring to dissolve the sugar, and strain over ice.

Fill a mixing glass halfway with ice cubes. Add:

  • 1 ½ ounces bourbon or rye whiskey
  • ½ teaspoon Simple Syrup
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters

Stir until well chilled, about 30 seconds. Strain over a large ice cube in a chilled rocks glass. Garnish with:

  • A lemon or orange twist
  • (A maraschino cherry)
