MANHATTAN
1 serving

My grandfather John, a prolific tender of the family bar, referred to these as “Manhappies,” and with good reason: At the end of a long day, they never fail to raise our spirits. A Perfect Manhattan uses half dry and half sweet vermouth. Scotch may replace the bourbon or rye in the formula, in which case it’s called a Rob Roy.

Pour over ice in a chilled rocks glass:

  • 2 ounces bourbon, rye, or blended whiskey
  • 1 ounce dry or sweet vermouth
  • A dash of Angostura bitters

Stir well. This cocktail may also be shaken with ice and strained into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with:

  • An orange twist or a small skewer of brandied cherries
