To make a Black Russian, omit the heavy cream. For a vegan version, substitute well-shaken, canned full-fat coconut milk or coconut cream for the heavy cream.

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice cubes. Add:

  • 1 ½ ounces vodka
  • 1 ½ ounces heavy cream
  • 1 ounce Kahlúa or other coffee liqueur

Shake until well chilled, about 12 seconds. Strain over ice in a chilled rocks glass.
