BLOODY MARY

When tequila takes the place of vodka in a Bloody Mary, it becomes a Bloody Maria; made with gin, it is a Ruddy Mary. A Bloody Mary without any alcohol is, of course, a Virgin Mary.

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice cubes. Add:

  • 1 ½ ounces vodka or aquavit
  • 6 ounces tomato juice
  • (½ teaspoon prepared horseradish)
  • 2 to 3 drops lemon juice, to taste
  • 2 to 3 drops Worcestershire sauce, to taste
  • Hot pepper sauce to taste
  • Pinch of celery salt
  • Pinch of salt
  • Pinch of black pepper

Shake until well chilled, about 12 seconds. Strain over ice in a chilled highball glass. Garnish with:

  • A small celery stalk
  • (A skewer of mixed pickles, such as cocktail onions, cornichons, pickled okra, pickled beets, etc.)
