FRUIT SMOOTHIE
1 or 2 servings

The basic proportions in this recipe can be used to create a wide variety of smoothies tailored to ingredients you have on hand. Note that if using a dark fruit such as blueberries, adding spirulina will turn your smoothie a muddy color.

Combine in a blender:

  • 1 cup frozen fruit (such as berries, cherries, or peach, mango, or pineapple chunks)
  • 1 frozen ripe banana, cut into chunks
  • ½ cup milk, nondairy milk, coconut water, water, or fruit juice (or ½ cup yogurt and 3 tablespoons water or milk)
  • (Up to 1 tablespoon sweetener, such as honey, maple syrup, or agave syrup, or 2 pitted dried dates)
  • (1 tablespoon nut or seed butter, such as peanut, cashew, or sunflower)
  • (1 teaspoon spirulina powder, chia seeds, or flaxseeds)

Blend until smooth. Pour into a glass and serve, or serve in a bowl and top with any of the following:

  • Bee pollen
  • Seeds or nuts, such as sunflower, pumpkin, flaked coconut, chia, or hemp
  • Granola
  • Cut-up fresh fruit
